Question & Answer
Shifting Fear to Awareness
By Anupo Joy

   Ron asked me about his cat Sally and how to deal with her shock when the other cat Rain jumps up on the bed. Rain is a big softy and really, reeeeeally wants to be friends, so he is no actual threat.
   There are several layers to this. One layer is about Sally being in an altered state. A lot of times we think our animals are sleeping but they are in an altered brain wave state like meditation. In altered states one becomes more aware of the different energy bodies and less aware of the physical one, as a result, being touched physically can a disorienting jolt to the body's system. This is true for people as well as animals.
   Before you touch a "sleeping" animal, especially one like Sally, who reacts in shock, be sure you project thoughts toward them that you are going to connect physically. This gives them a chance to adjust their field (aura) to receive you. In the case of the other cat, Sally feels is sneaking up on her, he needs to be told to let Sally know he is coming to visit. First when he comes into the room and to keep telling her as he crosses the room and jumps up on the bed. He can do this mentally or best would be to make little lovey dovey sounds the entire time. Ron can demonstrate that to Rain verbally.
   Another layer of this issue is what fear does to awareness. Fear is usually contraction and with that contraction the personality tries to move away from whatever is perceived to be dangerous. An animal who habitually reacts in fear doesn't have their antenna / energy field out very far. Because their awareness is not extended they are not able to detect what is coming toward them. As a result it is easy to sneak up on them. It is a victim reaction.
   In contrast I have been with animals, such as herd dogs, who extend their awareness long distances, know exactly who is coming into the yard and react accordingly before the new arrival is seen. I have met cats who do this too. These were animals who felt it was their job to take care of the home. It was their job to know, so they developed the skill.
   In Sally's case Ron could let her know it would be a really big help to him if she would let him know before anyone in the household comes to the door of his room. This way she helps him by extending her awareness. When she has that skill wired he could include the front door of the apartment in that request. Giving an animal a job that develops new skills is an excellent way to help them step out of a victim reaction.

   Looking at a sunset, just for a second
you forget your separateness:
you are the sunset.
That is the moment when
you feel the beauty of it.
But the moment you say
that it is a beautiful sunset,
you are no longer feeling it;
you have come back to your separate,
enclosed entity of the ego.
Now the mind is speaking.

And this is one of the mysteries,
that the mind can speak, and knows nothing;
and the heart knows everything,
and cannot speak.
Perhaps to know too much makes
it difficult to speak;
the mind knows so little,
it is possible for it to speak.

Listening for Baby Names
By Anupo Joy

   It's baby animal time and I've gotten a few calls about what the little ones want to be named.
   If you listen AND feel your way around sounds and vibrations you will begin to perceive more and more. You are not grabbing the name out of the ethers, you are just listening and sensing. You are collecting information not identifying. Putting logic aside and just noticing.
   When people are learning to hear animals intuitively they tend to over analyze the information they may be getting. It's part of the amazing nature of our brain. It identifies something as quickly as possible and with that identification comes information gathered in the past. A handy thing when a rattlesnake is coiled and rattling, you know it's dangerous. Not so handy, however, when you are working in a dimension with nonphysical reference points.
   We tend to give our loved ones at least two names. The formal one and the cuddly one. Just notice which name is being offered.
   When I first got Shanti she had been named several names, mostly related to her size and none of the names reflected the loving graciousness this seven month old kitten displayed. I began finding out her name by wondering what it could be. Just being curious for several days. I noticed I was hearing an S sound a lot and it seemed like it could be one syllable and with the sound came a wonderful, soft, gentle emotional quality. In my wondering, I found myself thinking it's similar to the word shanti but that's not quite right. At some point I realized that if I shortened the sound from Shanti to Shants that that was exactly the sound I was hearing. So her formal name became Shanti and my nickname for her is Shants. What is a wonder is that Shanti means inner Peace in Sanskrit and she is the return of my beloved friend Mir, whose name means Peace in Russian.
   Our companions love us and they want the name to be fun for us, too! If the name Shanti had not popped into my mind I would have started looking up names to find out which ones matched the S sound and had that wonderful emotional quality I felt. It's a delightful investigation. Allow your curiosity to play and let yourself wonder "What could the little one's name be?"

Neuter Scooter
   We are into summer and there simply are not enough homes for all the animals born. It is a sad fact that every day, over 50 unwanted animals are destroyed in San Diego County. This includes every breed and age of dogs, rabbits and cats. Being healthy or loving or even purebred does not save their lives. At this rate the average San Diego County home would have to house 24 animals!
Many veterinarians and veterinary staff donate their time to help provide spay and neutering through SNAP. Spay & Neuter Action Project.
Cat- $20   Male Dog- $30   Female Dog- $40

News Stories:

Whale Thank You.
    A while back, a young female humpback whale became entwined in a web of crab traps and lines. It was a struggle for her to stay afloat with hundreds of pounds of traps weighting her down. Hundreds of yards of line rope were also wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso and pulled tight in her mouth.
   A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallone Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her - a very dangerous proposition. One slap of the tail could kill a rescuer. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her.

   When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around - she thanked them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eye was following him the whole time, and he will never ever be the same.
